This zoo although open to public in 1963 was already established in 1959. Nehru Zoological Park is also popularly known as Hyderabad Zoo. The park covers over 380 acres and the Forest Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh manages the zoo and provides grants for it. Today it is one of the most popular recreation spot in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The major responsibilities of Nehru Zoological Park is to breed and rehabilitate endangered animals, conduct educational programs to raise public awareness for the protection of wildlife and to carry research on wildlife for conservation and management. Such is the popularity of the zoo, that it attracts an average of 15 lakh (1.5 million) visitors annually. The zoo has successfully bred exotic and indigenous animals and birds in captivity like the Indian rhino, Asiatic lion, tiger, panther, gaur, orangutan, crocodile, and python. To offset the reduction of the natural populations, they have also bred several animals at the zoo and rehabilitated them in various deer parks and sanctuaries.
Following are the animals one can look at the zoo. Among carnivores there are African Lion, Himalayan Black Bear, Malayan Sun Bear, Panthers, Small Indian Civet, White Tiger, Indian Lion, Jackal, Striped Hyena, Wolf, Fox, Jaguar, Tiger etc. In Herbivores category you can see the Barking Deer, Black Buck, Brow-Antler, Deer, Flying Fox, Four Horned Antilope, Gaur, Hippopotamus, Hog Deer, Indian Elephant, Indian Rhino, Mouse Deer, Nilgai Samber Deer, Spotted Deer, Swamp Deer, Wild Ass and Wild Boar. Primates include African Green Monkey, African Red Pattas Monkey, African Wolf Monkey, Bonnet Monkey, Capped Langur, Chakma Baboon, Chimpanzee, Orangutan, Slender Loris etc. There also a wide variety of Reptiles, Birds, Nocturnals and Rodents at the zoo. One can also go one the Safaris offered at the zoo to have a look at the animals in their natural habitats.
The zoo also has taken the responsibility of educating and training personnel from newly established zoos. The zoo also arranges and conduct educational sessions for visiting groups from schools, hobby camp groups etc. The zoo’s team of experienced veterinarians takes care of the animals and all their health needs.
